  • Course Overview

    This course is designed to introduce you to watercolour techniques and the combination of watercolour and pen and ink. Participants will explore how to blend these mediums to create vibrant, expressive artworks that combine the fluidity of watercolour with the precision and flow of ink in water. You will be given you an overview of materials and tools, shown basic techniques of watercolour using washes, wet into wet brush work, using a variety of resists and ways to create texture in watercolour through different themes such as landscape, seascape and still life. The sessions will include a mix of instruction, demonstration and hands on practice. You will explore colour mixing, use different types of brush shapes to create different lines, shapes and textures, wet -into-wet techniques for blending colour; You will learn about composition and also using negative shape, techniques for special effects such as spattering, lifting and glazing with watercolour; then move on to Pen and Ink, later to combine both mediums. As we progress through the course, we will look at a range of artists for inspiration who work in different techniques and there will be opportunities to bring in your own subject interests; you are encouraged to bring resource materials for your own use.

    Who is it For

    The course is suitable for all skills levels from beginners to those looking to refine their skills and leads onto other art courses.

  • What will it be like?

    Teaching methods: Visual Demonstrations and explanations. Handouts and one to one teaching. Group discussions

    There will be hands on practical activities throughout the course and verbal and written instructions.

    How students are assessed: Through Question and Answers during group discussion and one to one teaching. The tutor will will give you verbal feedback about your progress in individual reviews and whole class reviews.

    Record of students progress and achievement will be kept in their sketchbooks as practical artwork produced throughout the course or their folders and on individual learning plans.

    By the end of the course, you should be able to build up a watercolour using transparent layers of colour. Use wet into wet fluid watercolour techniques also combining pen and ink brush painting with watercolour. Be able to create depth in a composition through colour relationships that bring areas of the painting forward or into the distance.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    You will need to bring your own Watercolour paints, brushes and paper, 300grm paper is best on a detachable A3 pad. Hb pencil, eraser and pencil sharpener. The tutor will go over materials needed in the first session.

  • What could it lead to?

    You can Join other Art classes at the Mary Ward Centres including Foundation and Pre-foundation art courses. Incorporate watercolours into your sketch book as part of planning other paintings and your sketching diary
