This course will help you learn hands-on and de-mystify the different dials, buttons and settings on your device. Discover the different lenses and what they do and unpack jargon by learning about the exposure triangle, aperture, shutter speed, field of view, depth of field and develop the confidence to use your camera with all its settings.
Who is this course for?
The course is suitable for anyone who tends to only use their camera or smartphone in fully automatic mode and wants to gain a better understanding of what the device can do. You will be interested in learning about photography and want to gain digital skills to progress technically and creatively.
What does this course cover?
Lens selection, focal length, field of view and using panorama mode
How to focus and control depth of field and create soft-focus photos
Metering modes, exposure compensation and the exposure triangle
Control of time values and creative ‘long exposure’photography
White balance, colour temperature and the use of filters.
Introduction to the use of flash and High Dynamic Range (HDR) modes
Understand pixels and data when sharing / storing photos to the device or cloud
Practical tips for better composition, leading to more creative photography
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
Understand how a camera meters light and how to photographs to get the look you with the look you want from your device
Understand how lens choice shapes photography, learn about the different lenses and ‘field of view’available for cameras and smartphones
Understand depth of field and different ways to achieve soft focus and how to freeze or convey movement in an image.
Understand focus options and how to set focus for different types of photography including moving subject and close focus.
During this course you can expect to be taking a lot of photographs and learn new techniques as you get to know your camera better. The tutor will demonstrate and provide written and video handouts and there will be practical photography sessions in every class. Self-study assignments will help you continue to learn after class, and as you grow more confident you will discuss your photographs in class and learn by seeing the images made by everyone else in the student group.
It is always best to bring your own camera, which can be either a digital SLR, mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, an advanced compact camera or suitable smartphone.
