  • Course Overview

This course is for beginners and people with some experience of watercolour already; you will explore techniques for capturing landscapes and foliage through watercolour’s luminosity and transparency. We will cover how to show light and shadow on trees, pattern and texture in foliage and the hills. We will study Eric Raviollious’ use of layered transparent hues, graphite structure, and limited palettes to achieve clarity, rhythm, and light. Through guided exercises, learners will recreate textures of sky, architecture, and countryside subjects using graded washes and dry brush control. The session includes demonstrations of how to paint landscapes using resists such as wax taking inspiration from Eric Ravillious’ art, and reference photos you will develop watercolour techniques. Emphasis is on understanding cool and warm contrasts and subtle shadows. By the end, participants will complete finished landscape paintings conveying depth, calm.
