By the end of the course, you should be able to:
1. Translate what you see into a well-composed photograph using technical, creative and compositional skills
2. Have the confidence to explore the city and photograph it with a clearer personal viewpoint, knowing better what you want to do with the camera
3. Have the confidence to discuss and share your course photographs with the other students and present a course project.
4. Know more about photography theory with an understanding of the influential movements that shaped the direction of contemporary photography.
The course is practice-led, and you will be guided on location with demonstrations and given individual help, as needed. Some classes will stay mostly in one location and others involve walking with everyone encouraged to learn at their own pace. Most classes include a break for photography review with opportunities to review your photos with the tutor and other students for feedback. There will be self-study each week to edit and share the photos you made on location and guidance from the tutor in developing a personal project.
You will need to bring your own camera which can be either a digital SLR, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, or an advanced compact camera. For the class in the autumn term, which includes night photography, you will also need a tripod. You should have a computer or tablet to review and upload your images from home. As the course involves being outdoors some of the time you should be confident that you can walk comfortably on location.
Finish the course feeling more confident and inspired to use the ideas the next time you are out photographing. Students may enrol again on this course, as locations change from term to term. Alternatively, choose a different photography course or try the Lightroom Digital Photography course for more creative digital editing skills.
Digital Photography in the City is a practical course that combines all the enjoyment of a photo walk with guided tuition. Whether the concrete high walks of the Barbican, the green spaces of city parks or wonderful views of the Thames at night, this course is about gaining practical skills from learning topics on location in London. Be in-spired by the city and see how your creative ideas can take shape from location to photograph.
This ten-week course will introduce you to the technical details of your digital camera so you can use it more confidently and creatively. It is for complete beginners or for those who are struggling to move beyond using their camera in fully automatic mode. Learn about aperture, shutter speed and how to control the exposure triangle, field of view, depth of field and get ready to use your camera with semi-automatic and manual settings.
Whether you photograph with a smartphone or camera, this series of weekend workshops takes a practical approach to helping you to understand digital photography.
