The course is suitable for students of all levels of experience, including beginners, and is perfect for anyone who is interested in learning techniques to decorate glass - including the basic principles of glass fusing.
The course will introduce students to basic fusing techniques within glass including tack and contour fusing and glass slumping. If you are new to glass, you will learn to cut straight lines and curves and complete simple project briefs which give you the opportunity to make a coaster and a pendant or your own idea. For the more experienced students can work on their own fused glass projects with technical support from the tutor. We will look at lots of samples and materials and discuss firing schedules, different surface techniques including glass decals, and look at other artists work.
Please note that if work is to be fired there will be a maximum size of 20cms x 20cms to ensure that we can fit all of the work in the kiln.
Different techniques will be introduced every two weeks so that students have time in the first session to test and make samples, and then a further session to develop their ideas further, and apply the process to their own area of interest. There will be also be time in the last sessions to design a personal project, focusing on the techniques that you have enjoyed.
The surface effects can be applied to stained glass or used to decorate fused glass objects and jewellery.
Basic materials are provided - extras can be bought in class (optional only).
Students can continue on similar courses and attempt more ambitious designs and techniques. There are some further and higher education colleges that offer general glass making courses.
