Ceramics

It is a one day course. You will be introduced to basic techniques materials and processes of ceramics for sculptors; how to develop a small sculpture from the first idea to completion, using techniques such as slab building coiling or pinching; simple coloring. Suitable for all levels.

Who is this course for

The course is suitable for people of all levels of experience who have an interest in sculpture and ceramics.

What does this course cover

It is a one day course. You will be introduced to basic techniques materials and processes of ceramics for sculptors; how to develop a small sculpture from the first idea to completion, using techniques such as slab building coiling or pinching; simple coloring. This course is also suitable for beginners.
Inspiration will be drawn from imagination and/or observation of natural forms and the work of other artists.
Your work will be fired in the kiln and can be picked up by appointment.
By the end of the course you will:
1. Produce a small ceramics sculpture
2. Have a first understanding of different types of clay and their uses
3. Have experimented with simple applications of color to your ceramics sculpture

What will it be like

The course will be taught through demonstration, practice and discussion. Learners will be encouraged to explore their own idea for their ceramics sculpture, in developing confidence & skills in a creative, exciting and supportive learning environment. The tutor will suggest simple projects and ideas for works when appropriate and will divide her time equally amongst all the students in the class.

What else do you need to buy or do

Most materials will be provided. Students will benefit from an A4 Sketchpad or sketch book to use alongside the course.

What this course could lead to

Students may take further courses at the Mary Ward Centre. For example you may decide to explore a course in carving, ceramics for sculpture or mixed media sculpture.
You can also progress to the Foundation into Art or to Pre-foundation courses at The Mary Ward Centre or elsewhere.
