New: Evolutionary Psychology

Have you ever wondered why you find some people more attractive than others? How do we respond to facial expressions? How much impact do emotions, the need for cooperation and behaviour have on choosing a partner? It has long been acknowledged that the human body evolved over eons, slowly calibrating to the African savanna on which 98 percent of human ancestry lived and died. So, too, did human brains. This course will explore how, according to evolutionary psychologists, the mind is shaped by the pressure to survive and reproduce; how emotions, communication skills, and language ability are adaptations that have enabled ancestors to thrive.
