It is not uncommon to hear today calls for a defence of and a return to Enlightenment values: but what exactly were they? The flourishing of the natural sciences from the 17th Century onward brought about not just an entirely new conception of the nature of the world but also a radical rethinking of the nature of reason itself, which in turn had profound implications for our understanding of the self and of society. But rather than a celebration of the serene progress of triumphant reason, the Enlightenment itself might be better understood as a series of crises. We will explore the myriad of issues these developments raise through an examination of the great thinkers of the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries.

This course explores the intricate relationship between philosophy and literature through the works of Gilles Deleuze, Roland Barthes, Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida, and Michel Foucault. Each of these thinkers demonstrates how philosophical arguments can inspire literary writing and how literary analysis can lead to profound philosophical insights.
With Barthes and Foucault, we will examine the concepts of authorship and the notion of the author's 'death.' Blanchot will guide us in exploring the idea of a 'space of literature,' while Derrida will challenge us to consider the nature of the literary act. Deleuze will present literature as a machine that generates specific affects.
We will read short stories by Brecht, Beckett, Proust, Melville, Kafka, and Sacher-Masoch, alongside significant works from our five main philosophers: Deleuze's Proust and Signs and Coldness and Cruelty, Barthes' S/Z and The Death of the Author, Blanchot's The Space of Literature and The Book to Come, Derrida's Writing and Difference and Of Grammatology, and Foucault's The Order of Things and What Is an Author?.
Through these readings, the course aims to illuminate the processes by which literature becomes a dynamic force in the creation of philosophical ideas, and how philosophy, in turn, embarks on a literary journey to create a ?logical? novel.

Nature is at once an object of reverence and a source of anxiety. On a planet that is increasingly in tumult-from whence billionaires seek to flee to other worlds-it is nevertheless possible to unpick some of the conceptual dimensions of this powerful but enigmatic word 'nature', if not to tame it then at least to reflect more deeply upon it. Understood by the Greeks as phusis-to grow, become-and opposed to both human law (nomos) and to tools/technology (techne), we can begin by returning to this most fundamental of observations and ask, how can we conceptualise the things that grow? To what extent do we as humans participate in, or are part of nature? What is the difference between things that live and things that have never been alive? What is the essence of beings? How does one being differ from another? What concepts-environment, biosphere, world, cosmos-best frame how to think about generation and our role within it?
As our own world becomes increasingly virtual, artificial and technological, we imagine we are able to master nature: yet many of the thinkers studied on this course would advise caution. Is there any possibility of living harmoniously with our own nature and non-human nature alike, or are we forever mired in mediation or alienation?
Thinkers we will discuss on this course: Aristotle, Lucretius, Spinoza, Schelling, Hegel, Kant, Bacon, Darwin, Marx, Sj?? & Mor, and others.

A famous social anthropologist once described his job as being a sort of cross-cultural private eye, spying into people's cultures instead of their bedrooms! Anthropologists look at very different societies, often finding different solutions to common human problems, for example the problem of how to obtain food or how to raise children, or how to explain sickness or understand what happens after death. Discovering these differences (or similarities) is fascinating and brings us to the essence of Anthropology - it makes us stand back and question our own assumptions. It shows that almost no piece of human behaviour is either natural or 'inevitable'. On this course we will examine some of the ways people think and act in different cultures, including our own.

One unexpected outcome of the Enlightenment period was the rise of nihilism, a crisis of finding any real meaning in the emerging scientific worldview. The development of the new philosophical movement of phenomenology can be seen as, in part, a response to this crisis. Husserl sought to analyse the role of consciousness in constituting meaning in experience in a way which united our daily experience of the world with the scientific world view. The approach he developed was swiftly challenged in the name of a more embodied and historically situated account of meaning by the work of Heidegger, de Beauvoir, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. This course will explore how the emergence of phenomenology as a philosophical method came to be inextricably linked to the wider issue of Existentialism as a response to the urgent problems of the 20th Century.

The innovative concept of schizoanalysis, pioneered by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, serves as a radical departure from traditional psychoanalytic approaches, particularly those rooted in Freudian theory. Schizoanalysis unfolds a multi-dimensional understanding of the psyche that diverges significantly from conventional frameworks, focusing on the fluidity of desire and its intricate connections with social and environmental networks. This approach underlines the processes through which individuals and collectives navigate their existences, challenging the rigid structures of Oedipal psychoanalysis and emphasizing the production of desire as a social and political phenomenon.
In the realm of literature and art, schizoanalysis offers a groundbreaking perspective that prioritizes experience over interpretation. This stance advocates for a direct engagement with texts and artworks, encouraging a form of interaction that exceeds the traditional search for hidden meanings or symbolic representations. Instead, it suggests that art and literature act as catalysts for generating intensities and sensations, creating experiences that are internal to the work itself rather than imposed upon it by external theoretical frameworks.
Throughout this course, we will explore Deleuze and Guattari's primary critiques of psychoanalysis and the core tenets of the alternative they propose. Concurrently, we will derive practical tools from schizoanalysis for experiencing art, which we will apply in our experimentations with cinema, visual arts, and literature.

Philosophy in the second half of the 20th century was faced with the demands of formulating an adequate response to the world after the second world war: the rise of different forms of totalitarianism, the horrors of the war itself and the role of technology in bringing this about became urgent issues. We will examine two forms of response to this situation. Firstly, we will examine how Critical Theory attempted to explain and move beyond the social contradictions that had been laid bare during this period. Following on from this, the question of the place of language in our relations with the world came to a central focus of attention, giving birth to the ideas of structuralism and post-structuralism. In this part of the course we will engage with the work of Lacan, Derrida, Foucault and Deleuze.

Is there still a place to talk about ideologies in our time? This course examines this question against the backdrop of an encounter between philosophy and ideology, through four influential thinkers: Karl Marx, Louis Althusser, Fredric Jameson, and Slavoj ?i?ek. Each philosopher provides a unique perspective on the concept of ideology, enriching our understanding of its role in shaping socio-political paradigms.
Karl Marx offers a foundational critique of capitalism and its ideological superstructures, laying the groundwork for understanding the influence of economic and social conditions on consciousness.
Louis Althusser extends Marx's ideas with his theory of ideological state apparatuses and the concept of interpellation, which explores how individuals are recruited into ideological positions by institutions.
Fredric Jameson adds a cultural dimension, analysing how ideology operates within cultural production and consumption. His notion of the political unconscious discloses how cultural artifacts reflect and reinforce dominant ideologies.
Finally, Slavoj ?i?ek, known for his provocative style and use of popular culture, builds on these foundations, exploring the psychoanalytic dimensions of ideology and its operation within the unconscious.
With these authors, we will not only examine what ideology is, but also ask what kind of concept of ideology emerges from 21st century life.
